Hand built in Britain. Graceful and complex, the curvaceous Brunswick 40 takes its inspiration from a gentleman’s cushion case watch in the Fears archives, first made in 1924. This sportier iteration of the Brunswick is the perfect all-round watch, taking you from beach to boardroom with ease.
CASE
The Brunswick 40’s elegant yet sporty 40 mm cushion-shaped case has no flat surfaces. The case’s glancing curves are machined from 316L stainless steel in Hong Kong, to a level usually reserved for precious metals. The depth of the polish along with the hand grained finish applied to the top of the case’s corners showcase the sophistication of the machinery and the skill of the operator.
Built with uprated proportions and a screw-down crown, the Brunswick 40 is 200 m water resistant, allowing it to be submerged in water when the crown is screwed all the way in.
Complementing the case is a traditional ‘onion’-shaped winding crown. The crown’s grooves catch the light, adding a touch of radiance to the edge of the case.
DIAL
The Brunswick 40 Silver features an Opaline Silver dial with a bright finish created using a coating of 99.9% pure silver.
Expertly made in Germany, the surface of the dial is on two levels, each with its own distinct finish:
- Central lower section – Finished with micro-guilloché. Concentric rings are cut into the dial’s surface using a CNC machine. These delicate ‘rills’ are so fine, like a record's grooves, that they appear invisible to the naked eye yet catch the light giving a beautiful subtle sunburst finish.
- Outer raised section- A genuine Opaline finish using a traditional method of polishing with straw that results in a bright frosted effect, which the numerals are hand riveted to.
The ‘Edwin’ numerals are milled from a block of brass before being diamond polished and then coated in black gold, giving them a warm, grey/black appearance. These numerals are realised in our custom ‘Edwin’ typeface, specially designed for Fears by our horological typographer and inspired by the many different typefaces the company has used throughout its history.
Look out for the tiny red triangle at 12 o’clock. A subtle reference to several pieces in the Fears Archive.
HANDS
The Brunswick 40’s distinctive ‘Fears’-shaped hands are milled from solid brass with a bevel cut down the centre using a diamond tool. This results in a highly polished surface that catches the light, giving excellent legibility in low-light conditions. These hands are finished in a coating of black gold that perfectly matches the polished 3D numerals.
The seconds hand is hand-painted in a deep red, matching the red triangle at 12 o’clock. Historically Fears watches with a central seconds hand had this hand painted red to aid with timing of medical and sporting events.
MOVEMENT
The Brunswick 40 is powered by a Swiss made, automatic winding ETA 2824-2 movement. Winding itself when worn on the wrist, this movement is made to Top-grade standard with a decorated winding rotor hidden behind the closed case back. This movement has had its date mechanism removed allowing precise control when setting the time with no "ghost" date position.
The accurate and reliable ETA 2824-2 movement is a popular choice, with easy servicing and regulating. We service and modify each movement in Britain.
BRACELET
The Brunswick 40 is fitted to a bespoke stainless steel 5-link bracelet with expertly brushed and polished links. Featuring solid screw links, the bracelet has a substantial feel while the silky-smooth movement of the links ensure a comfortable fit around the wrist. The bracelet can be micro-adjusted with both the 8 mm and 6 mm links provided, ensuring a perfect fit. The bracelet is secured to the wrist using a trigger-release butterfly style clasp with the Bristol flower enamelled discreetly inside the blades.
The Brunswick 40 features a 20 mm lug width and is designed to fit all of the straps in our range. The bracelet can be removed without tools using its quick-release springbars.
When you purchase a Brunswick 40 we can adjust the bracelet size for you before sending it. Please contact us by email with your order number and wrist size and we’ll do the rest. We will provide any spare links in an envelope with your watch.
INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED
Each watch we make carries a unique serial number. Engraved between the lugs at 12 o’clock, this number helps us identify your watch and its history.
BRITISH BOX
For decades Fears presented watches in a dark blue box with a cream-coloured lining. We are delighted to continue this tradition today. The Brunswick 40 is presented in a bespoke wooden box, crafted in Britain from English Ash, which is stained Fears Blue and lined in genuine cream suede.
