The Seiko Astron SSH187J1 is created under the design theme of Solidity, reflecting Seiko’s enduring passion for innovation and forward-thinking watchmaking. Limited to just 1,500 pieces worldwide, with only a small allocation available in the UK, this striking solar-powered timepiece combines lightweight construction with bold, contemporary presence. A super-hard coated titanium case and bracelet are paired with dual curved sapphire crystal glass, framing a dark turquoise blue dial inspired by the beauty of the cosmos.
Set within an all-black 43.3mm case and ceramic bezel, the distinctive dial showcases a dramatic ‘spiral galaxy’ pattern with a circular, whirling effect designed to evoke bright stars in space. This intricate glittered finish is particularly challenging to achieve on a solar cell while maintaining efficient charging performance. Sleek lines, a slim profile and a compact, angular design create a seamless flow from the case through the lugs to the bracelet, enhancing its modern aesthetic.
Powered by the new in-house 5X83 solar movement, the SSH187J1 charges efficiently and delivers advanced functionality, including a high-precision 1/20th of a second chronograph for measuring elapsed time. The subdial at 12 o’clock displays the chronograph, the 9 o’clock subdial controls mode selection, and the 6 o’clock subdial offers a dual-time feature. As part of the Seiko Astron collection — the world’s first GPS solar watch — it is powered by light and automatically adjusts to the exact time via the latest satellite technology.
