The SPB453J1 is a modern re-interpretation of Japan’s — and Seiko’s — very first Diver’s watch, originally released in 1965. That pioneering automatic timepiece marked the beginning of Seiko’s commitment to diving reliability, safety and professional specifications. Its reputation for toughness was proven between 1966 and 1969, when it was worn by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition on missions to the South Pole, performing flawlessly in extreme conditions.
This latest revival enhances the historic design with more advanced specifications, increased water resistance and an improved power reserve. Crafted in a 40mm stainless steel case, the watch features a deep ‘cove’ black bezel and matching dial, protected by sapphire crystal glass. Designed to meet professional ISO diving standards, the hands and indices are coated with glow-in-the-dark Lumibrite for excellent legibility, while the upright date display at the 4.5 o’clock position further improves clarity. Comfort has also been refined with a slimmer 13mm case profile, short-pitch bracelet links and a shorter buckle.
Powering the SPB453J1 is the in-house automatic 6R55 calibre, delivering accuracy of -15/+25 seconds per day alongside a substantial 72-hour power reserve. With water resistance up to 300 metres, this timepiece perfectly reflects the Prospex philosophy — combining “Professional” and “Specifications” — to offer a practical, reliable and durable watch for sports lovers and adventure seekers alike.
