Based on the SRQ047 design, this high-function chronograph features a super hard-coated bezel with a tachymeter speed measurement tool, dual-curved sapphire glass and contrasting sub-dials for clear, precise readability.
At the heart of the HBD001J1 is Seiko’s in-house 8R48 mechanical chronograph calibre, combining a vertical clutch and column wheel for accurate elapsed-time measurement. The 42mm diameter case has a 49.5mm lug-to-lug measurement, while the multi-row bracelet echoes the design used on the original ‘Panda’ chronograph from 1972. The 8R movement series incorporates three key elements engineered for maximum precision: a vertical clutch helps eliminate shuddering or jumping of the hands when the chronograph is started or stopped; a column wheel provides precise control of chronograph operation; and a three-pointed hammer ensures all hands return to zero instantly and in perfect synchronisation when the reset pusher is pressed.
The Speedtimer name carries a significant place in Seiko’s history. Introduced in 1969, the original Seiko Speedtimer was a major innovation milestone as the world’s first automatic chronograph watch with both a column wheel and vertical clutch, technologies that remain prerequisites for high-functionality chronographs designed to measure elapsed time accurately.
