The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer HBC004J1 draws on a landmark moment in Seiko’s watchmaking heritage. First introduced in 1969, the Speedtimer was the world’s first automatic chronograph with a vertical clutch and column wheel, establishing a new level of accuracy for high-performance stopwatches. This latest Speedtimer features a colour scheme inspired by the neo-classic cars of the 1970s, known as “young-timers,” while its flowing case shape, first featured in the famous 1972 Seiko “Panda,” is finished with a super-hard coating.
Under curved sapphire glass, the petrol blue dial is encircled by a countdown timer, with a strong Lumibrite coating on the inner-ring reference triangle for enhanced clarity. Compact and comfortable, the HBC004J1 has a 39.5mm diameter and 200m water resistance. It is paired with a sustainable LWG-approved leather strap featuring an embossed pattern inspired by vintage car interiors, combining the character of classic automotive design with the practical qualities of the Speedtimer.
The HBC004J1 is powered by the in-house built 6R55 automatic calibre, offering accuracy of -15/+25 seconds per day, advanced shock protection and an impressive 72-hour (three-day) power reserve. A date calendar complication is positioned at 4.5 o’clock. As a Seiko Prospex timepiece, it reflects the meaning behind Prospex—a combination of “Professional” and “Specifications”—with a design focused on being practical, reliable and durable to meet the high standards required in extreme environments for sports lovers and adventure seekers alike.
