The SJE117J1 is a refined re-interpretation of Japan’s — and Seiko’s — first-ever Diver’s watch, originally released in 1965 and marking the beginning of Seiko’s renowned expertise in diving timepieces. Between 1966 and 1969, the original model was worn by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, proving its exceptional durability and reliability in some of the world’s most extreme environments. Carrying the historic Marinemaster name, this modern revival blends Seiko’s diving heritage with a contemporary marine sports aesthetic.
Inspired by the original 1965 case design, this model features a refreshing aquatic green dial beneath box-shaped sapphire crystal glass. The textured horizontal dial pattern enhances its marine character, while mirror-finished lugs and rectangular Lumibrite-coated indices echo the distinctive look of the original Diver. With a more compact case size than previous re-interpretations, it closely recreates the silhouette of the first model. Despite featuring a box sapphire crystal and sapphire exhibition case back, the super hard coated case measures just 12.3mm, making it the slimmest Seiko mechanical diver built to ISO Diving Standard.
Powering the SJE117J1 is the newly developed in-house 6L37 mechanical calibre, delivering impressive precision of +15 to -10 seconds per day and a 45-hour power reserve. As part of the Prospex collection — combining “Professional” and “Specifications” — this timepiece is engineered to be practical, reliable and durable, meeting the demanding standards required by sports lovers and adventure seekers alike.
